How To Determine Whether To Keep Your Cat Indoors Or Not

You may have trained several dogs in the past, but nothing can prepare you for raising your new feline friend. Cats are nothing like dogs. They require more attention during their growing years and more personal time playing with their owner. This article will highlight some of the main differences between the two.

For a healthier, happier cat choose plain litter over scented litter. Cats like nice, clean, clumping cat litter. Scoop your cats litter box daily and change it completely every three days or so. When you change the box, wash it out with water and dish soap. Don’t waste your money on liners as cats tend to destroy them.

Protect your cat from strangling by making sure the cords of curtains and blinds are secured and out of reach. When you make or purchase a dangly toy for your cat, be sure to supervise during play. Put the toy away if you will not be around to watch.

Make sure you have a good pet carrier or basket for transporting your cats from one location to the next. A proper carrier or basket should have enough room for them to turn around in comfortably. It should also be easy to clean. Make sure that it is lined with a blanket, cushion, or towel to help it stay comfortable and cozy for them when traveling.

Do you love your cat but suffer from allergies? If giving up your feline-friend is not something that you can do, try these things first. Get rid of as much carpeting as possible because your cats dander gets trapped in it. You can also not allow your cat in your bedroom at all. This will make living with your cat easier on your allergies.

Make sure that you have a good tablecloth for your kitten. Cats like to make a mess when they eat. That means you will have to tidy up the food left beside the cat bowl. You can get a pet mat or use a piece of old fabric to put under it for easy cleanup.

Who says only dogs can do tricks? Cats are very intelligent and have the ability to learn as well, especially as young kittens. Some people train their cats to play fetch just like dogs do. There are even people who have successfully trained their cat to use a regular toilet, instead of a litter box.

Think hard before allowing your cat outside. The outside world is very dangerous for cats. They can get fleas, feline AIDS or even leukemia. There’s the chance that your pet could be harmed by other animals or passing vehicles. If you allow your cat outside, make sure you live in a reasonably safe area.

Let your cat exercise their hunting instinct. Cats are natural born hunters; however, this does not mean you need to allow mice to invade your home. Hide treats and toys throughout your home, and your cat will have a blast hunting down their treats. You can also find feather and laser toys that your cat can chase and pounce on.

While children should help with the care and responsibilities of a cat, leave the litterbox duties to the grownups or older children. A cat’s litterbox can carry diseases and parasites. Since younger children may not follow proper handwashing procedures, this job is better left to those older and more responsible.

Cats feel safest in an elevated location. To keep your cat happy, offer him a spot of his own up high where he can survey his kingdom. Placing a shelf or two up high will not take up too much space in your home. You could even place a small bed or blanket on the shelf to make your cat feel more comfortable.

When you are washing a cat litter box, it is a good idea to use basic soap and water. You may think that it would be more sanitary to use a harsh cleaner like bleach or ammonia, but all that will do is create a smell that the cat will find offensive.

If you have more than one cat, it is a good idea for you to give them each their own food bowls. Place them far apart so that each cat has their space. If you provide just one bowl for the cats to share, it may cause larger cats to bully the smaller ones.

Think carefully about where you put the litter box for your cat. It is temping to put it someplace where the odor will not be noticed. It is equally important that the litter box is readily accessible to your cat, though. This will keep your cat as happy as possible. If the box is placed on a cold floor, place a mat under it.

A cat that is declawed should never spend time being outside. Cats without claws cannot stand up for themselves if they encounter another animal. The result could be injuries or death. Cats should only be declawed if they’re going to be inside fulltime. Only take out the front claws. Don’t have the back claws removed, since cats don’t use them to scratch up your house.

When adopting a cat, consider adopting two. Cats are social creatures, and they prefer to be in the company of other feline friends. Having two will help to keep your kitty occupied, and it can make it easier to take care of your new pet. If owning two is not an option, make sure to spend extra time giving your cat love.

While both animals are great to have and can peacefully exist with one another under one roof, don’t take adopting a new kitten too lightly. Plan ahead and have enough resources in reserve like cat food and such. If you are going to train your cat indoors, don’t forget to buy extra litter for the first few months because they can get messy.
